10 Cybersecurity Practices to Protect Your Business

By Higher Information Group on June 16, 2022 | Technology Solutions

Consider this: The cost of cybercrime is expected to grow by 15 percent per year over the next five years, reaching $10.5 trillion by 2025*, according to Cisco/Cybersecurity Ventures "2022 Cybersecurity Almanac."

There’s little doubt that cybercrime is one of the fastest-growing crimes in the world, and it continues to affect businesses of all sizes and in all industries. Here are some cybersecurity best practices to help prevent attacks:

1. Provide cybersecurity awareness training to employees so they don’t fall for phishing scams trying to access their personal information. Savvy hackers can make emails look like they’re from a trusted individual or legitimate organization. While these emails might look “official,” many contain attachments or links that can affect your device. Users should always check links (Hover over the link to see the target URL on most browsers.) before clicking on them.

2. Use a firewall to protect your network. It’s your first line of defense in protecting sensitive data from cybercriminals.

3. Install anti-virus and anti-malware software on your computer to reduce vulnerability.

4. Keep software and computer hardware up to date. Make sure you have the latest software security upgrades and that your hardware supports the upgrades to protect yourself from cyber-attacks.

5. Use a virtual private network (VPN) to encrypt your connection and protect your private information.

6. Avoid using a public network and use a VPN when you’re connected to one.

7. Install an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) on your website. Having an SSL certificate installed, and HTTPS enabled on your website will help encrypt all information that travels between a visitor’s browser and your web server.

8. Create strong passwords that include numbers, characters, and a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters for optimal security. Update your passwords every three months and make sure you use different passwords for different accounts.

9. Enable 2-factor authentication to keep your accounts more secure. It’s another layer of protection that helps verify that it’s you who is accessing your account and not someone who’s unauthorized.

10. Back up sensitive data on the cloud or offline storage device. If there is a security breach, you’ll be able to restore important data quickly.

Staying protected from cyberattacks is challenging, but by employing these best practices you’ll be better able to stop cybercriminals from wreaking havoc on your company.
